Fireplaces

This stone fireplace had a brick lintel which had been fitted many years ago and had seen better days. It was decided to replace it with an oak beam which was more in keeping with the original construction.

1. The room is cleared      2. The Beam is in place     3. The work is complete

The beam was 'green oak' and cut from an unused railway sleeper. To bring out the grain it was treated with a mix of white spirit and linseed oil.

A shelf unit was constructed to match the existing one and the hearth was lowered to give a better balance. As a final touch pine shelves were added to an alcove to display the owner's collection of porcelain owls.
